Cleanings & Radiographs

Professional cleanings (dental prophylaxis) performed by a certified dental hygienist form the foundation for preventing gum disease and tooth decay. In a professional cleaning, your hygienist will:
  • Remove plaque from the teeth – Plaque is a sticky substance that forms in the mouth from food, saliva and bacteria. Plaque sticks to teeth and causes tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Remove calculus (tarter) above the gum line – Calculus is plaque that has hardened on the tooth surface and is difficult to remove. (Calculus below the gum line indicates gum disease and requires a different procedure to remove it.)
  • Polish and remove stains from teeth.
Radiographs also known as dental x-rays, are helpful to see cavities that an exam may not catch. Both of these procedures are common for most regular dental check-ups.

Inlays, Onlays, White Fillings

Inlays and onlays are the traditional method of restoring teeth -- also known as indirect fillings. If the biting surface of a tooth is damaged, and if regular fillings are not adequate, inlays and onlays are used to fill crevices or repair extensive damage. An inlay is bonded on the center of a tooth, while an onlay is bonded atop the whole biting surface.

Nitrous Oxide

Porcelain Crowns & Bridges

A porcelain bridge is used to correct the gap created by a missing tooth or missing teeth. It is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap with a tooth-like restoration in the gap. Bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants and are typically made of metals, alloys or porcelain. Porcelain makes the restoration look like real teeth in shape and in color. Porcelain crowns cap off a pre-existing tooth restore it after some decay has been removed. They can also be used to restore chipped teeth, broken teeth, gaps in teeth, and other damage. Metal crowns are also sometimes used, and have the shape of real teeth, but are usually made of gold or silver.
